Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. Her parents did not allow her to start acting by her parents until she reached an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the strain it might create. Perry was a shy teenager and was not a performer. She began acting at Northwestern University to gain friends as she moved to the university from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness brought Perry back to California which was where theatre jobs were in demand. Perry's mother and I appeared on Broadway together as part of The Other Place, in 2013. Perry was in the show with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC film The Family, in 2016. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal with her father. Also, she was cast on her role on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite being connected to the persona.
